Clean energy in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is racing from coal toward wind, solar and tidal — with legislated targets of 80% renewables by 2030. Sundamentals has deep roots here, including the fight to protect fair net metering.

Selling power back: how net metering works here

Nova Scotia's enhanced net-metering program credits solar exports at the retail rate — preserved after the 2022 public campaign against a proposed system-access surcharge.

Best bets

What works best in Nova Scotia

Solar with real payback

High power rates plus retail-rate net metering give NS solar owners some of Atlantic Canada's best returns — Halifax's Solar City financing helps with up-front cost.

Tidal pioneer

The Bay of Fundy's tides could power the province many times over; demonstration turbines are proving the technology here first.

Heat pumps everywhere

Mini-splits are the Maritime standard for a reason — Efficiency Nova Scotia rebates (unlocked by a home assessment) and Halifax's HalifACT financing make the switch from oil straightforward.

Questions

Nova Scotia FAQs

What happened with the solar surcharge?
In 2022 Nova Scotia Power proposed a monthly charge on net-metered solar homes. Public pressure — which Sundamentals joined — led the province to block it and protect net metering.
When does coal actually go away?
Provincial and federal regulations target phasing out coal power by 2030, replaced primarily by wind backed by imports and storage.
