Renewable Energy in Canada: The Big Picture

Explore how Canada makes its electricity, from hydro and wind to solar, nuclear and beyond, and how the grid and net-zero 2050 fit together.

Course overview

What you'll learn

You'll be able to describe how Canada generates its electricity and why it varies so much by province.
You'll be able to explain the difference between electricity and total energy use, and why electrification matters.
You'll be able to compare the strengths and limits of hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy, geothermal and ocean energy.
You'll be able to explain nuclear power's role in Canada's low-emission electricity.
You'll be able to describe how grid operators balance variable renewables and keep power reliable.
You'll be able to explain Canada's net-zero 2050 goal and how households can take part in the energy transition.

Canada already has one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world, thanks largely to its rivers. Yet the picture looks very different depending on where you live: some provinces run almost entirely on hydro, while others still rely heavily on natural gas or coal. Understanding those differences helps make sense of the news, of energy policy, and of the choices you make at home.

This course is a big-picture tour. You'll learn how Canada generates its electricity, how electricity fits into the country's overall energy use, and the strengths and challenges of each major source: hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy, geothermal, ocean energy and nuclear. You'll also learn how the grid keeps supply and demand in balance and what Canada's net-zero by 2050 goal means.

Energy policy can be divisive. As an independent non-profit, Sundamentals aims to explain the facts clearly and fairly, acknowledge trade-offs, and help you think through the issues for yourself. Where policies are still changing, we say so.

The course is free, self-paced and takes about an hour. It has three modules with short knowledge checks and a 10-question final exam. Score 80% or higher to download your PDF certificate of completion.
