Clean energy in British Columbia

BC's grid is already ~90% clean thanks to hydro — so the biggest wins for BC homeowners are electrifying heating and transport, backed by some of Canada's richest rebate programs.

Selling power back: how net metering works here

BC Hydro closed net metering to new customers in July 2026 — new solar customers are paid a flat per-kWh rate for exported power instead. New BC Hydro rebates for solar and home batteries help offset the up-front cost; check the rebate finder for current terms.

Best bets

What works best in British Columbia

Heat pumps

With clean, affordable electricity, swapping gas or oil heating for a heat pump is BC's single biggest home-emissions win — and CleanBC pays for a large share of it.

Electric vehicles

Charging on BC's hydro grid makes an EV nearly emission-free per kilometre. The provincial passenger-EV rebate is on hold, but the federal incentive and BC Hydro charger rebates (with municipal top-ups) still apply.

Solar in the Interior

Kamloops, Kelowna and the Kootenays see far more sun than the coast — solar pencils out well beyond the Lower Mainland.

Questions

British Columbia FAQs

Is solar worth it in rainy Vancouver?
Coastal yields are lower (~1,000 kWh/kW), but panels still produce meaningfully — and Interior BC rivals the Prairies. A local evaluation tells you which side of the line you're on.
What's the fastest emissions cut for a BC home?
Replace fossil heating with a heat pump. On a ~95% clean grid, electrifying heat removes most of a typical home's footprint at once.
