In 2022, Nova Scotia Power proposed a new monthly "system access charge" on homes and businesses with net-metered solar panels. For a typical rooftop system, it would have added a significant cost every single month — enough to wipe out much of the savings that made solar worthwhile.
The proposal threatened the livelihoods of hundreds of solar installers across the province and the investments of thousands of families who had done exactly what governments asked: generate their own clean electricity.
What we asked for
We called on the Premier of Nova Scotia and the Utility and Review Board to:
- Reject the solar system access charge in full.
- Protect existing net-metering customers from retroactive changes.
- Keep Nova Scotia on track for its legislated renewable electricity targets.
The outcome
Nova Scotians made their voices heard — and the province acted to block the charge. This petition is now closed, but the work continues. See our open petitions to keep solar fair across Canada.
